Tau Beta Sigma History

Tau Beta Sigma was first mentioned by Wava Banes and a few of her classmates, Emily Rosell Williams to their band director at Texas Tech D.O. Wiley in the end of 1937. The organization was meant to be the female counterpart of the honorary band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi. Tau Beta Sigma was so serve as a honorary service society that was designed to give women a place to gain positive experiences from their involvement in marching band. In June in 1943, the women at Texas Tech petitioned the Grand Council of Kappa Kappa Psi to become a part of their national organization as a active chapter. However, because of the war that was raging in Europe there was serious doubt as to when the Fraternity would be able to meet and vote on the issue. Instead the men suggested that Tau Beta Sigma make their organization national like Kappa Kappa Psi did in 1919. Yet the KKY did agree to allow Tau Beta Sigma to become a "sister organization". As the women were working to make their organization go national they ran into problems with the legislation in Texas. In 1945, A. Frank Martin convinced the women of Tech to surrender their ALPHA status as the Mother Chapter along with their constitution, rituals, and jewelry designs to the band club at Oklahoma State University, and accepted the status of Beta Chapter. In March 26, 1946, a charter was granted to the women at OSU legally creating the organization of "Tau Beta Sigma." On May 4th the women at OSU drove down to the women at Lubbock and offically installed the Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma.

Iota Chapter History

Today the women of the Iota chapter have a great pride in the rich history of both our chapter and the organization to which we belong. The Iota chapter started out as the Golden Wavettes organized in 1944. They petitioned for a charter on January 21, 1948. The Iota chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was chartered on February 14, 1948, along with our brothers of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. This was the first join installation in history of both organizations. The Iota chapter consisted of fourteen members, including the sixth National President Janet West Miller, and two honorary members. Unfortunately, weather conditions delayed the installation until February 21, 1948.

Also, past National President Karen Miller was a member of our organization and went on to serve as our sponsor for a few years after. Our primary focus is serving the Music School at Baylor University, especially the Golden Wave Marching Band.
